Hyphenated American

October 23, 2017

We have a poem written by one of my dearest friends below.  It's complex yet simple and carries a deep message.  Let me know any thoughts you may have and I can pass them along.

Hyphenated American

He gets down on one knee

and asks to marry me.
Am I supposed to be happy?
As a woman in America

Seeing his face everyday
makes the love go away.
Am I not allowed to feel this way?
As a woman in America

As the story line goes
my stomach grows.
Am I supposed to glow?
As a woman in America

The baby cries
and a part of me dies.
This isn't how I'm suppose to reply
As a woman in America

They say I am young and it's just a phase.
One day this feeling will go away.
but why can't my belief stay?
As a woman in America

Waiting alone
for my husband to come home.

Is this how I'm supposed to be shown?

As a woman in America

Feeling trapped in a marriage
woman look at me with disparage.
Does this make me a bitch?
As a woman in America

Not wanting a child by my side
I take it up with pride.
Is this something I should hide?
As a woman in America

They say I am young and it's just a phase.
One day this feeling will go away.
but why can't my belief stay?

As a woman in America
